Hardening the Grid: A Case Study from New York Power Authority and Israel Electric Corporation
Today’s power grids are facing significant challenges that jeopardize their operations and transmission assets. The rising electricity demand due to population growth, the expansion of data centers, and the shift toward electrification are all straining transmission infrastructure. Additionally, the growing demand for renewable energy is leading to record setting interconnection queues thanks to congested grids.
Additionally, climate change intensifies the problem by increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather events, such as hurricanes, wildfires, heatwaves, and winter storms, which damage critical grid components and lead to prolonged power outages and substantial economic losses.
Grid modernization, distributed energy resources, demand response programs, and energy efficiency improvements can address some of the challenges of an overloaded grid. However, power line monitoring, and Grid Enhancing Technologies (GETs) which provide real-time data, is a powerful tool to enhance grid resilience by quickly identifying and reporting damage from extreme weather, facilitating rapid response and repair. The technology also provides a real-time look at capacity capabilities on a given transmission line through Dynamic Line Ratings (DLR), often increasing capacity by upwards of 40%.
