Asia Clean Energy Summit (ACES) backs growth of carbon markets in ASEAN
Singapore, July 24th 2024 – The Asia Clean Energy Summit (ACES) is set to return with a groundbreaking addition: the inaugural Asia Carbon Summit. The new programme underscores the pivotal role of carbon markets in driving the transition to a low-carbon economy, in Singapore and the broader Asia region.
Continuing with its conference programme for discourse on clean energy technologies and solutions, the focus of the year will be onreshaping and realigning net-zero objectives to meet the growing demands of climate change mitigation, delving into the intricacies of national and corporate commitments, and offering a lens through which innovative strategies, policy adjustments, and technological advancements can be viewed in the bid to achieve carbon neutrality. Organised by the Sustainable Energy Association of Singapore (SEAS), the event will take place from October 22-24, 2024, at the Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore.
Asia Carbon Summit
The inaugural Asia Carbon Summit will provide a platform for industry leaders, policymakers, and innovators to explore the significant opportunities within carbon trading. By fostering a vibrant carbon market, Singapore aims to enhance its position as a leading hub for sustainable finance and carbon services, contributing to global efforts to mitigate climate change. Dr. Amy Khor, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment, and SEAS patron, emphasised the importance of carbon markets: “By developing and sustaining a high-quality carbon market, we can unlock new avenues for sustainable growth and drive the transition to a low carbon economy for Singapore and the broader Asia region. I hope that the discussions and collaborations at the Asia Carbon Summit will facilitate and inspire innovative solutions and collective efforts to propel us towards a greener and more resilient future.”
Underscoring the urgency for the carbon discourse and solutions in the region, Edwin Khew, Chairman of SEAS, remarked, “Despite the potential, carbon markets face challenges such as regulatory and legal uncertainty, inconsistent market integrity and verification standards, and difficulties in securing early-stage financing for projects. Additionally, the immaturity of some ASEAN carbon markets, coupled with the need for better policy alignment and coordination, pose significant hurdles. Addressing these issues is crucial for unlocking the full potential of carbon trading in the region.” He added, “The integration of the Asia Carbon Summit into ACES highlights our commitment to advancing carbon markets as a key component of sustainable development. This summit will not only provide insights into the latest developments in carbon trading but also position Singapore as a nexus for carbon services and innovation in the region.”
The inaugural Asia Carbon Summit will feature keynote speeches, panel discussions, and workshops with experts from around the globe. Topics will include the latest developments in carbon pricing, the integration of carbon markets in corporate strategies, and innovative technologies for carbon capture and storage.
ACES 2024 will offer a comprehensive programme that includes sessions on renewable energy technologies, energy storage solutions, grid integration, green finance, and digital transformation in the energy sector, among others. The summit will feature an exhibition showcasing cutting-edge innovations and sustainable solutions from leading companies worldwide. The summit is an annual component of the Singapore International Energy Week and is co-organised by SEAS, Nanyang Technological University and the National University of Singapore. The event is also supported by lead sponsor, GE Vernova, knowledge sponsor KPMG, associate sponsor OPIS, and supporting partners ADB, EDB Singapore, the Energy Market Authority of Singapore, Enterprise Singapore and National Environment Agency (NEA).
This year, SEAS and NEA are jointly organsing an Energy Efficiency Track, as an initiative under the Energy Efficiency National Partnership programme. It will feature sharing by industry experts and panel discussions on how industry can decarbonise through energy efficiency improvements and transform themselves by adopting robust energy management systems and solutions.
